Ondersteuning van het project / Support for the Project
Zoals vermeld in de algemene omschrijving van het Porselein Project Dresden is de Stichting opgericht om de werkzaamheden te faciliteren die moeten leiden tot de complete digitale catalogus in de vorm van een data-base van de collectie Aziatisch porselein, bijeengebracht door Augustus de Sterke in het begin van de 18e eeuw. In eerste instantie is de Porzellansammlung in Dresden (onderdeel van de Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, SKD) verantwoordelijk voor de inhoud en financiering van dit project, maar de stichting heeft bewezen zeer nuttig te kunnen zijn door extra inkomsten te genereren en zo incidenteel te kunnen bijdragen aan het financieren van activiteiten die in Dresden niet voorzien en niet begroot waren. Daaronder valt bijvoorbeeld de (Engelse) redactie van ondersteunende essays van wetenschappers; de inzet van tijdelijke krachten; incidenteel onderzoek naar herkomsten van porselein uit Dresden elders; reis- en verblijfkosten van specialisten (binnen Duitsland). Belangrijk in 2021 was ook het volledige financieren van een aanvraag bij de EU in Brussel voor steun. Helaas werd deze aanvraag niet gehonoreerd.
Recent is Dr. Chen Yi, eerder conservator oude Chinese kunst aan het British Museum, toegetreden tot het project team om vertalingen van Chinese teksten op porselein te verzorgen, bepaalde voorstellingen te duiden en om basis informatie van de beschrijvingen in het Chinees te vertalen. In London heeft Dr. R. Faulkner (conservator V&A Museum) zorg gedragen voor de editing van Japanse teksten. De stichting heeft bijgedragen aan de kosten hiervan.
Inmiddels is de staf van de Porzellansammlung begonnen met het digitaliseren van de door specialisten aangeleverde informatie en is er een zeer veel-belovende, multi-functionele proefversie van de website gereed gekomen om collega’s wereld-wijd en nieuwe sponsors te informeren. Ook hieraan heeft de stichting financieel een bijdrage geleverd.
Ook op een andere manier wil de stichting een bijdrage leveren, en wel door porselein dat in de afgelopen eeuwen uit de collectie verdween (door verkoop, schenking, diefstal etc) te traceren in openbare collecties elders en deze stukken te registreren. Zo nu en dan komen dergelijke stukken in de handel en is het streven deze indien mogelijk terug te laten keren naar Dresden. Sinds 2021 is dat voor maar liefst zes objecten gelukt !

As mentioned in the general statement about the Porcelain Project, the foundation aims to support the creation of a complete catalogue as a digital data-base of the collection of Asian porcelain, amassed by Augustus the Strong in the early 18th century. The Porzellansammlung, part of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, SKD, is the first responsible for the content and the financing of this project, but the foundation has proved its usefulness by generating extra income. Thus it was able to to help in financing some incidental activities that had not been foreseen and were not budgeted in Dresden. For instance, the English editing of essays by specialists; temporary assistance for the staff; incidental research about provenances of Dresden porcelains elsewhere; costs for travel and stay of specialists (within Germany). An important activity in 2021 was the full financing of the preparations for an EU application in Brussels. Unfortunately, this application was not honoured.
Recently Dr. Chen Yi, former curator of Ancient Chinese Art at the British Museum, joined the team. She helps in translating Chinese texts on porcelain, identifies specific scenes and will translate into Chinese the basic information of the entries. Dr. R. Faulkner, curator at the V&A Museum in London, is editing texts in Japanese. The foundation partly facilitated these scholarly activities.
Meanwhile the staff of the Porzellansammlung has started work on the digitalisation of all information the cataloguers have provided. A most promising, multi-functional pre-edition of the website has been produced and will be used to inform colleagues world-wide and to attract new sponsors. The foundation supports this financially as well.
In other ways, too, the foundation gives support. Porcelains that have disappeared from the collection in Dresden in the past centuries (sold, stolen, given-away) are being traced in public collections wold-wide and documented. Accidentally, such pieces are now offered commercially and if possible, the foundation tries to have them returned to the Dresden collection. This was achieved for no less than six pieces since 2021 !
